Farewell and Thankyou

12 Dec 2006 12:00 by archive. Posted in Division One News. »

It has been a fantastic season for UTS Gridiron, but each season has it’s losses. Sadly, we have four major club contributors who are retiring after the 2006 Grand final season. Thank you all for your contributions over the years. You will be sorely missed.

Tom HesterTom Hester
Wide Receiver (LB, QB)
Tom is the most versatile player on UTS. During his many years with UTS, he has played every position and exceeded in them all. He even guided UTS to a week nine victory over the Mustangs as a temporary head coach. Tom’s contributions over the years have been vital to the team’s success, and he will be sorely missed by the club.

Noah ParkerNoah Parker
Offensive Guard (NT)
Noah played four years for the Michigan Wolverines in the US before moving down under and play for the Concord Jaguars in 2003. When the Jags folded in 2004, Noah came to the aid of a struggling UTS unit. He has been a running back’s dream - helping turn the 2-6 team he joined make the Grand Final in ‘06. Noah was elected team captain and selected to play state in all three of his UTS seasons.

Lewis AstridgeLewis Astridge
Free Safety (QB)
Lewis was promoted to starting Quarterback in 2001. After leading UTS to their best record in 2002 with 17 combined TDs, he earned a nomination for league MVP. In 2005, he found a new niche at the Free Safety position, where he has reeled-in 8 interceptions. Lewis has twice been selected for the NSW Wolfpack in his seven seasons with the club.

Fred GaitauFred Gaitau
Defensive Lineman (LB)
Former Lions retiree Fred decided to give Gridiron one more season with a new club, UTS. Fred ignited sparks on the defensive front. He is best known this season for stuffing running backs for losses. He was one of the 2006 team leaders in tackles. He has been a blessing without a disguise.

Lions Defeat UTS 34-26

1 Dec 2006 12:00 by archive. Posted in Division One News. »

In what was a great match between two evenly matched teams, the Lions came away with NSWGFL crown in a nail-biting 34-26 victory. The score was 14-13 at halftime, the Lions extended the lead in the 3rd, and UTS caught up in the 4th. At the final whistle, UTS fell 8 points shy of winning the league championship.

While the narrow loss was disappointing, UTS would like to congratulate the Lions on winning their 4th straight NSWGFL championship. We would also like to thank our fans and supporters. Your passion on the night was amazing, and the entire team thanks you for your inspiration.

UTS now closes their 2006 as runners-up of the 2006 NSWGFL Waratah Bowl. We will be adding photos, game reports, stats and other notes in coming weeks. Don’t forget there is also a lineup of offseason events approaching shortly, so be sure to check back for updates.

Lastly and most importantly, a huge congratulations goes to all the UTS Gridiron players and coaching staff who contributed to the most successful season in club history. Coaches Andrew Douglas and Ese Enari have done an amazing job turning UTS into the championship team of 2006. The players also put in a massive amount of hard work and commitment to achieve such an amazing goal.

That was the final match of the 2006 Division One season. UTS are already focused on the 2007 season, with all eyes on the Championship Trophy.

Congratulations UTS! You are all winners. To see the full 2006 Division One team, go to the 2006 roster.

Welcome to Australia’s Superbowl ladies and gents! UTS Gridiron Division One squad have successfully made it to the NSWGFL Grand Final, the Waratah Bowl. It is their first ever appearance in the clubs’ 12-year existence. UTS earned their spot after defeating the West Sydney Pirates in the semi-finals, 52-32. It is also one step further from last season, when they were knocked out of the playoffs in a narrow match against the Lions 21-29.
