UTS Gridiron

If you’re a new student at UTS this year, we will be at Orientation day. Come along and say hi, ask us any questions you may have, and register to play some football!

‘O’ Day is run by the UTS Union and is held at Building 1, City campus, 9am-4pm 23 February.

On 13 March the club will be holding our Annual General Meeting. All executive and committee member positions will be vacated by the current members, and will need to be voted back in if they choose to continue within those roles. New candidates may also nominate themselves to join the voting process.

Hey guys, while Jamie and myself continue to put together videos to put up on the UTS Gridiron Podcast, it’s time for you to help out our club.

If you subscribe to the video podcast via iTunes (which is probably the easiest way to go), why not head over to the iTunes store and give it a rating – five stars of course! If you’re in the mood, why not write a quick review and let people know what you think of the podcast.

Your rating and reviews help us gain visibility within the iTunes store, which introduces new players to the sport, which in turn gains more new players to our club.

And of course, the UTS Gridiron podcast will always remain completely free, and compatible to play on your iPod, iPhone, and most other portable media devices.

The 2010 NRL Season is fast approaching, getting under way Friday the 12th March.

So if you’re interested to get involved in the UTS NRL Tipping Comp for 2010 below are the details on how to go about it.

The cost to enter for the entire season (which includes the NRL Finals) is only $20.

The format will involve selecting the winners of the weekly games.

For that you receive:

• 1 point for tipping the correct winning team
• 2 points for tipping a draw
• 3 bonus points for tipping the round

Details of the tipping comp

Selections are due 5 minutes prior to kick off of each match, and if for some reason you miss submitting your tip you will receive zero points (0) for those games only.

A knockout comp. Where each tipper nominates one winning team that they think will win each week (Tippers cannot pick the same team in two consecutive weeks). If the team they select wins, they progress to the next week. If the team they select loses, they are knocked out. (NOTE: this will not knock them out of the overall tipping comp – it only affects the bonus knockout comp).

You as the tipper are responsible for submitting your tips through the Oztips website (Oztips send out reminders). Alternatively you can SMS me you tips (by the required cut off point) and I can update your tips for you being the Competition Manager. My Number in case you don’t have it is 0418 600 326.

The allocated list of Prize money:

Overall Tipping Comp (Place getters)

• 1st place = 55% of the overall prize pool
• 2nd place = 20% of the overall prize pool
• 3rd place = 10% of the overall prize pool
• Winner of the Knockout Comp = 15% of the overall prize pool.

* Please note the percentages may vary in the event of shared place getters

FIVE players from the UTS Gridiron Football Club celebrated the New Year with a friendly match in American Samoa, after they were selected in the national under-19s team.

The five players who joined the 40-strong Australian Outback team were selected from the 2009 junior nationals held on the Gold Coast last year.

The players were defence back Lachlan Facchini, defensive lineman Nick Kondilios, offensive lineman Sateki Mafileo, wide receiver Stephen Palmer and quarterback Jean Prill.

Congratulations to Lachlan Facchini, Nick Kondilios and Jean Prill who were recently selected on the U/19’s Australian Outback Team.

The U/19’s Australian Outback Team will play on New Year’s Day in American Samoa against an American Samoan Development Squad at Veterans Stadium Pago Pago.

This will be the first game ever played between both countries and American Samoa’s first international game.

The U/19’s Australian Outback Team consists of forty (40) players which were selected from recent 2009 Junior Nationals, held on the Gold Coast. Eight (8) other players from the victorious NSW Wolverines State Team were also selected on the Squad. The Team will depart Dec 27 and arrive back in Australia Jan 4.

UTS Gridiron wishes all selected players the best of luck in representing their Country.

For first-year UTS division one players, all logons have now been created for the Forum site, with username and password details automatically sent to the email address listed on your player registration form.

For returning players this year, your login username and password is the same as last year. Use the “forgot your password?” link if you’re not sure of your password. All email addresses have been updated to what is listed on this year’s player registration forms, so may be different from 2008.

For previous club members who would like to continue to access the Forum this season, please contact Matt Steel (email president) to renew club registration. Non-player membership is only $20 and helps support our football club. Forum accounts with no 2009 membership will be suspended within 7 days.

The format will involve selecting the winners of the weekly games.

Selections are due 5 minutes prior to first scheduled game for each round. Unfortunately this is the only way that Oztips manage this for the NFL Season
